Vaalharts Valley

The Vaalharts  agricultural valley is a fertile irrigation valley. Situated in North-east part of the Northern
Cape, the biggest of the nine provinces of South Africa. From a small farming settlement this region
developed over the past seventy years to one of the most important  agricultural marketing regions in
South Africa.
With products like pecan nuts, cotton, olives, citrus,lucerne, groundnut's, maize,
barley apricots, grapes, watermelon and peaches. Pecan nuts,  citrus and groundnut's export
increase every year.


History:
The valley was started as a irrigation scheme during the 1930. Due to the depression the Vaalharts
scheme was initiated to create employment and settle farmers on irrigated land.The valley is a result of
hard working and commitment. The first farmers arrived in 1938 and the second in 1939. They were
settled on farms of approximately 25 Hectare. The first farmers were settled near Jan Kempdorp and
Tadcaster. After World War  2 more farmers were settled around Hartswater ,Magagong and Hartsvallei,
while Taung was the major black farmer settlement.              

Today:

Today the valley is a result of hard working farmers from generation of origin settle farmers and new
comers all with one goal in mind; to explore the great potential of this fertile land. The result is a great
agricultural marketing region of various  agricultural  poducts like pean nuts , cotton, olives, citrus
groundnut's, maize, apricots, grapes, watermelon and peaches.

Pecan nuts, olives, citrus and groundnut's export increase every year.

Future:

With high skill  committed farmers and agricultural research it is a common fact that the Vaalharts valley
will take a leading role in the agricultural export market of South Africa
